A bit of a history. The plan was to quickly build a service with similar functions as travelbugs - but free of charge, and similar to geolutins, but much simpler to use. The initial draft of the system was done within a few days, then few weeks of the community testing and the launch: 26th October 2007 at 20:36 CEST. It was as crude as a bare metal - no email notifications (just RSS), no fancy graphics (this still remains true:), just one type of GeoKret (now we have several), only two types of log. You can look at the one of the first snapshots of the GK service at a web.archive.org (yes, 176 registered GeoKrets, 168 users. But the frontend of the service means nothing without YOU, the users! Thanks to you we've recently reached the GKFFFF (which means 16^4=65536 registered geokrets!). With over 102637000 km done by all of the geokrets, we are now at the 68% of the distance from the Earth to the Sun. We believe that during the next few years we will arrive there :)
Recently, thanks to the superhuman effort of our new developer kumy we migrated the service to the new server. You should expect the better performance and reduced downtime (to zero, we hope!). Meanwhile, we are working on the new, refreshed and improved version of the service (want to contribute? email us!).

Tak, dziś świętujemy dziesięciolecie geokretów! Krótkie wspominki - chcieliśmy stworzyć serwis na wzór travelbugów (ale lepszy i darmowy) i geolutynek (ale łatwiejszy w użyciu). Początkowy draft strony powstał w kilka dni i był mocno minimalistyczny. Po kilku tygodniach otwartych testów wystartowaliśmy - dokładnie 26 października 2007 o 20:36. Serwis był surowy do granic - bez alertów mailowych (tylko powiadomienia RSS), bez fikuśnej grafiki (to nam zostało , jeden typ geokretów (teraz mamy kilka), tylko trzy typy wpisów do logu (teraz mamy hoho . Aby przypomnieć sobie, jak to bywało drzewiej, zobacz na migawkę strony z grudnia 2007. 176 geokretów, 168 użytkowników. Ale strona i serwis byłby bezużyteczny bez WAS, UŻYTKOWNIKÓW, którzy w codziennym trudzie i znoju geokeszingu pamiętają żeby przenosić małę bezbronne przedmioty z miejsca na miejsce. Dzięki temu niedawno przekroczyliśmy psychologiczną barierę 16^4=65536 zarejestrowanych geokretów (a tym samym przekręciliśmy licznik z GKFFFF na GK10000). Jesteśmy także (mierząc całkowity dystans) w 68% drogi z Ziemi na Słońce. W ciągu najbliższych kilku lat powinniśmy tam wylądować...
Ostatnio, dzięki nadludzkiemu wysiłkowi naszego nowego dewelopera kumy przenieśliśmy serwis na nowy serwer. Mamy nadzieję, że wpłynie to znacząco na stabilność i komfort pracy. W międzyczasie pracujemy nad nową odsłoną serwisu, z nową szatą graficzną, API itp bajerami (jeśli chcesz się przyłączyć - zapraszamy!)

Der erste Entwurf des System wurde innerhalb weniger Tage erstellt, dann kamen einige Wochen Test durch die Community und der offizielle Start am 26. Oktober 2007 um 20:36 MEST. Das System war sehr simpel - keine E-Mail Benachrichtigungen (nur RSS), keine hübschen Grafiken (das stimmt noch immer :) ), nur ein Typ GeoKrets (inzwischen gibt es mehrere), nur zwei Logtypen. Du kannst dir einen der ersten Snapshots des GK-Dienstes unter web.archive.org anschauen (ja, genau: 176 Geokrets, 168 Nutzer). Aber das Frontend des Dienstes ist nichts ohne DICH, den Nutzer! Dank euch haben wir kürzlich GKFFFF (das heißt 16^4=65536 registrierte Geokrets!) erreicht. Mit über 102637000 km zurückgelegter Entfernung aller Geokrets sind wir nun bei 68% der Entfernung der Erde zur Sonne. Wir denken, dass wir in wenigen Jahren dort ankommen werden :)
Dank der übermenschlichen Anstrengungen unseres neuen Entwicklers kumy haben wir kürzlich den Dienst auf einen neuen Server migriert. Nine years ago, at 21:36, we launched a small site for registering traveling items. And today we passed the level of 1000000 logs in our databse! We have 60232 registered GeoKrets and 35327 users. All geokrets done about 0.57982 x the distance from the Earth to the Sun. Statistically, new geokret is registered every 1.3 hour, while new log entry is entered every 4.7 min. Happy bithday and thank you, the users, for keeping geokrety moving! :)
Dziewięć lat temu uruchomiliśmy niewielką stronkę służącą rejestracji przedmiotów podróżnych. Dziś strona nieco się rozrosła, mamy 60232 zarejestrowanych GeoKretów i 35327 użytkowników, a wszystkie geokrety przebyły łącznie odległość równą 0,57982 odległości z Ziemi na Słońca. Dodatkowo, dziś przekroczyliśmy granicę 1000000 logów w naszej bazie danych. Statystycznie nowy kret rejestrowany jest co 1,3 godziny a nowy wpis do logu następuje co 4,7 minuty. Wszystkiego dobrego z okazji urodzin! Dziękujemy też naszym użytownikom za wprawianie kretów w ruch. Tak trzymać! :)

Yes, holidays. But we are online again... :) Morza szum, ptaków śpiew.... ale jesteśmy znów online. Miłego!

"Thanks to" UPC, which is our network provider, we were four day off line. Fortunatelly, finally they were able to realize what happened and managed to fix it (but they even didn't say "sorry"). The positive news is that (apart that we are online again) we have now a better server which should help serve the content faster.
"Dzięki" UPC Polska mieliśmy prawie czterodniową przerwę w Geokretach. Pierwszego dnia mówili, że nic się nie stało, żeby sprawdzić diody na modemie itp., podczas gdy internetu nie miała połowa dzielnicy. Drugiego dnia zorientowali się, że coś tam przełączając na magistrali, źle podłączyli przez co połowa dzielnicy nie ma internetu. Ale na razie technicy nie mogą nic z tym zrobić. Trzeciego dnia w końcu się ogarnęli i załatwili sprawę (choć też nie było to takie hop-siup). No i oczywiście nikt nie powiedział nawet przepraszam. Pozytywna wiadomość jest taka (poza tym, że znów jesteśmy online), że ten czas wykorzystaliśmy na podrasowanie bebechów serwera, przez co krety powinny działać szybciej.

I've extrapolated number of geokrets registered in our service next years. According to first model we will reach GKFFFF at the end of June 2014. The more accurate "day" model says it will happen 2015-08-12.

Using a cool program named metapixel I've created two images of Geokrety logo and OpenCaching logo using pictures uploaded by our users. Check, if your picture is there! :)
Przy pomocy fajnego programu metapixel ze zdjęć przesłanych przez naszych Użytkowników stworzyłem dwie fotomozajki: logo geokretów i opencaching. Sprawdź, czy Twoje zdjęcie się załapało :)

When logging a Geokret it is possible to use your home location (if you declared one in your profile) just by clicking "Use my home coordinates" button. It is also possible (tatam!) to use your current location (if your system/browser can provide this). For this, press "Use geolocation" button, accept the browser monit and - here you are - your current (approximated) location is enterd as new geokret location.
Logując nową pozycję Geokreta można użyć swoich współrzędnych domowych (jeśli zadeklarowałeś takowe w swoim profilu) po kliknięciu na przycisk "zaloguj kreta u mnie w domu". A teraz uwaga: można także zalogować kreta w swojej bieżącej lokalizacji (jeśli system/przeglądarka umie udostępnić takie dane). W tym celu należy kliknąć na przycisk "Użyj geolokalizacji" i zaakceptować udostępnienie współrzędnych. Przybliżone współrzędne automatycznie wpiszą się we właściwe pole. Fajne, nie? ;)

Now you can rate the geokret you recently moved. Just click on the stars on the geokret's page. The scale is 1 to 5.
Dodaliśmy możliwość oceny przenoszonych kretów. Wystarczy kliknąć na gwiazdki na stronie kreta. Skala 1-5 gwiazdek.

we are pleased to introduce new GK type: a KretyPost. If you want to send a postcard to a friend, using caches as a post box and cachers-volunteers as postman, just register a geokret of this type and print a label-poststamp with tracking code. On the postcard, fill the recipient address (nick, country, waypoint), stick a printed poststamp and send it using nearest cache container :) Along with this new GK type we added new label for printing GK stamps (as an example, you are free to use your creativity). Have fun!

Thanks to OpenCaching PL developers (Łza) and new GK API we have have the possibility to log geokrety straight from the cache loging page. With one click. Good job!
