Das Unglück des Luftschiffes LZ 4
Während der am 4. August 1908 von Ferdinand Graf von Zeppelin begonnenen 24-Stunden-Fahrt Friedrichshafen – Mainz – Friedrichshafen hatte das Luftschiff LZ 4 am 5. August einen Motorschaden, sodass von Zeppelin eine Notlandung durchführen musste. In kurzer Zeit eilten tausende Schaulustige zum behelfsmäßigen Landeplatz auf einer Echterdinger Wiese. Einige Stunden später wurde das Luftschiff während eines aufgekommenen Sturms losgerissen und explodierte nach der Kollision mit einigen Bäumen auf Bernhäuser Gemarkung.
Am Ort der Landung wurde im Oktober 1908 in Echterdingen ein Zeppelinstein als Denkmal aufgestellt.
Das Wunder von Echterdingen
Das Unglück löste eine Welle der Sympathie und Hilfsbereitschaft unter den Zuschauern aus. Ausschlaggebend dafür war eine von einem Unbekannten gehaltene Ansprache an den Grafen, in der er am Schluss das deutsche Volk zu einer Sammlung aufforderte, um so einen neuen Zeppelin entstehen zu lassen. So erwies sich dieser Fehlschlag letztlich als Erfolg für Ferdinand von Zeppelin: Das Unglück bescherte seinem Projekt landesweite Aufmerksamkeit und Hilfsbereitschaft, und über die Zeppelinspende des deutschen Volkes in Verbindung mit dem Verkauf von Souvenirs aus dem Metall von LZ 4 kamen 6 Millionen Mark zusammen, die es von Zeppelin erlaubten, mit Gründung der Luftschiffbau Zeppelin GmbH in einem professionellen Unternehmen zu agieren.
Ein aus den Trümmerresten gefertigter Löffel befindet sich in der Sammlung des Stadtmuseums Leinfelden-Echterdingen.
Logbedingung
Mache mindestens ein Foto, auf man eindeutig erkennt, dass du dich am Zeppelinstein in Echterdingen befindest. Das Bild muss mit dem Online-Log hochgeladen werden. Dabei habt ihr folgende Möglichkeiten:
- Ausgedruckter Zeppelin (Vorlage zum Ausdrucken) beschriftet mit deinem bzw. euren Geocacher-Namen plus Datum oder
- Selbstgemaltes Luftschiff auf einem Blatt Papier beschriftet mit deinem bzw. euren Geocacher-Namen plus Datum oder
- Zeppelin-Spielzeugmodell plus dein bzw. eure Geocacher-Name(n) und das Datum z. B. auf einem Blatt Papier.
Hinweis: Alle Logs, die diese Bedingung nicht erfüllen, werden kommentarlos gelöscht. Das nachträgliche Hinzufügen des Namens und Datums im Foto führt ebenfalls zur Löschung.

The disaster of the airship LZ 4
During the 24-hour flight Friedrichshafen - Mainz - Friedrichshafen started by Ferdinand Graf von Zeppelin on 4 August 1908, the airship LZ 4 had engine trouble on 5 August, so von Zeppelin had to make an emergency landing. Within a short time, thousands of onlookers rushed to the makeshift landing site on a meadow in Echterdingen. A few hours later, the airship was torn loose during a storm that arose and exploded after colliding with some trees in the Bernhausen area.
A Zeppelin stone was erected as a memorial at the site of the landing in Echterdingen in October 1908.
The Miracle of Echterdingen
The disaster triggered a wave of sympathy and willingness to help among the spectators. The decisive factor was an address to the Count by an unknown person, in which he called on the German people at the end to take up a collection in order to create a new Zeppelin. Thus, this failure ultimately proved to be a success for Ferdinand von Zeppelin: the disaster brought his project nationwide attention and willingness to help, and via the Zeppelin donation of the German people in conjunction with the sale of souvenirs made from the metal of LZ 4, 6 million marks were raised, which allowed von Zeppelin to operate in a professional enterprise with the founding of Luftschiffbau Zeppelin GmbH.
A spoon made from the rubble remains is in the collection of the Leinfelden-Echterdingen town museum.
Log requirement
Take at least one photo that clearly shows that you are at the Zeppelin memorial stone in Echterdingen. The picture must be uploaded with the online log. You have the following options:
- Printed out zeppelin (template to print out) labelled with your geocacher name(s) plus the date or
- Self-painted airship on a sheet of paper labelled with your geocacher name(s) plus date or
- Zeppelin toy model plus your geocacher name(s) and the date e.g. on a piece of paper.
Note: All logs that do not fulfil this requirement will be deleted without comment. Adding the name and date in the photo afterwards will also lead to deletion.
