Welkom in de De Vlaaikensgang, een mooi stukje geschiedenis van de stad Antwerpen. De gang is ontstaan in 1591 en was de woonplaats van de schoenmakers. Een idyllisch plekje midden in de stad! Als u doorheen deze gang wandelt, denkt u heel even in 1591 te zijn, want de gang levert een pittoresk zicht op. Het steegje bestaat uit elf achterhuizen die ondanks het feit dat ze gerestaureerd werden er nog steeds ongeveer hetzelfde uitzien als toen ze net waren gebouwd. Voordat de Vlaaikensgang er was, woonde er familie van Niklaas Rockox. De familie Rockox was een vooraanstaande familie in Antwerpen. De vroegere burgemeester van de stad, Niklaas Rockox was goed bevriend met Rubens. Begin de jaren 60 wou men dit steegje volledig plat gooien om er een parking te kunnen aanleggen. Dit voorstel had veel tegenkanting en kon niet uitgevoerd worden, de stad Antwerpen besliste daarom om de Vlaaikensgang terug op te knappen en dit historische steegje te laten zoals het was. Terwijl u door de binnenplaats loopt, krijgt u mooie witte huisjes te zien, die stuk voor stuk elk hun eigen geschiedenis hebben.

Engels : in The Vlaaikensgang is a nice piece of history of the city of Antwerp, The corridor originated in 1591 and was the residence of the shoemakers. An idyllic spot in the middle of the city! As you walk through this alley you’d think you are in 1591, because the ensemble provides a picturesque sight. The alley consists of eleven houses, that, despite the fact that they were renovated, still offer about the same look as when they were first built. Before the Vlaaikensgang was there, the family of Nicolas Rockox lived here. The Rockox family was a prominent family in Antwerp. The former Mayor of the city, Nicolas Rockox was a good friend of Rubens. At the beginning 1960ies, there were plans to tear the place down to put up a parking lot. This proposal got a lot of opposition and could not be carried out. The city of Antwerp decided to renovate the Vlaaikensgang and restore this historical alley back to it’s original state. While you walk through the courtyard, you will see beautiful white houses, all of the have their own history
