Kościół został zbudowany w latach 1906-1911. W jego miejscu od 1564 roku stało kolejno pięć świątyń. Kościół jest mieszaniną stylów, na zewnątrz dominują elementy neoromańskie, wnętrze jest ekletyczne. Znajduje się w nim kilka obrazów z okresu międzywojennego. Dumą świątyni jest kolekcja witraży projektu Haliny Cieślińskiej-Brzeskiej, wykonane w zakładzie Józefa Olszewskiego. Odnoszą się one do historii polskich od chrztu w 966, aż po XX w - każdy witraż poświęcono innemu okresowi i wydarzeniu. Część witraży ma też tematykę typowo religijną i przedstawia na przykład czterech ewangelistów.
Charakterystyczne neoromańskie wieże kościoła, o wysokości 50 m są jednym z najbardziej rozpoznawalnych punktów w mieście. Niestety w 1944 r., gdy Augustów znalazł się w ogniu walk, zostały one wysadzone w powietrze przez Niemców wraz z całą fasadą kościoła. Dzieło odbudowy zostało wykonane dopiero w roku 1986.
W 2001 roku papież Jan Paweł II nadał kościołowi status bazyliki mniejszej.
Mikrus znajduje się na tyle bazyliki w drzewie obok groty z kamieni.

The church was built in 1906-1911 years. From 1564 one by one five temples stood in his place. The church is a mixture of styles, outside neoromanic elements are dominating, the inside is ekletyczne. A few images are in it from the interwar period. Duma of temple there is a collection of stained glass of the project of Halina Cieślińskiej-Brzeska, made at the unit of Józef Olszewski. They refer to Polish stories from baptism in 966, until XX in - every stained glass was devoted to other period and the event. The part of stained glass has also a subject matter typically religious and is introducing for example four Evangelists.
Characteristic neoromanic towers of the church, 50 m high are one of the most recognizable points in the city. Unfortunately in 1944, when Augustów was in a fire of fights, they stayed blown up by Germans along with the entire facade of the church. Work of the reconstruction was made only in 1986.
In 2001 the Pope John Paul II granted the status of the smaller basilica the church.

Die Kirche ist in den 1906-1911 Jahren gebaut worden. In seine Platz standen fünf Gotteshäuser der Reihe nach seit 1564 Jahr. Die Kirche ist ein Stilgemisch, draußen dominieren die neuromanisch Elemente, das Innere ist ekletyczne. Sich wieder auffinden ein paar Bilder in ihm aus der Zwischenkriegszeit auf. Duma des Gotteshauses die Sammlung der Glasmalereien des Projektes Haliny ist Cieślińskiej-Brzeska, in dem Betrieb Józef Olszewski ausgeführt. Sich auf beziehen sie von einer Taufe in 966, bis XX in - jede Glasmalerei ist der ander Zeit und dem Ereignis gewidmet worden. Den Teil der Glasmalereien hat er auch die typisch religiöse Thematik und er stellt zum Beispiel vier Evangelisten dar.
Die charakteristischen neuromanisch Türme der Kirche, mit der Körpergröße 50 ist der m irgendeiner aus der am sehr wiedererkennbar Punkte in einer Stadt. Leider in 1944 r., wenn Augustów er hat sich in dem Feuer der Kämpfe wieder auffinden, sie sind geblieben von Deutschen bei die ganz Fassade der Kirche in die Luft sprengen. Das Werk des Wiederaufbaues ist in Jahr 1986 ausgeführt worden.
In 2001 Jahr hat Papst Johannes Paul II der Kirche den Status der kleineren Basilika gegeben.
