The canyon is narrow and winding, with tight chasms and high canyon walls. The dominant color is red, but sandstone in purples and whites also appears.
The green route takes hikers through the canyon. Climbing with hand and footholds is required.
Details about the hike
From the parking area, take the green route through the riverbed until you reach the red canyon. The canyon appears suddenly with red sandstone on the rock.
The canyon has steep descents of about 3-4 meters in three places; in the first place two metal poles are there for you to hold on to. Kids often enjoy sliding down the rock here, although you might prefer to climb down backwards or slide down slowly. The other two descents are very narrow; use the hand and footholds to climb down. They are not difficult, but they do require some height to reach each of the footholds.
You continue through the Shani riverbed. As soon as the riverbed opens up, there is a trail marked in black and after it in red which returns to the parking area. (If you would like to do only the short trail, you can go back to the parking area on the black trail above the canyon from the end of the red canyon [circular short route].)
The black trail begins with a climb up the red rock and continues above the canyon. The climb up is easy with generous ropes and handholds along the way. Once you have reached the top of the canyon, the route is level and easy also on the red trail final sesson.
Tip: Don’t count on returning through the red canyon instead of above. Although it is physically possible for a tall person to do so, the canyon is often too crowded to return. The hike, while not difficult, must be continued once begun.
Tip: If you plan to hike in the red canyon during the summer months, you should plan to go very early (before 7 o'clock), but I recommend to do between month Oct. - Apr. Note that the handholds will get very hot during the heat of the day.
Tip: Bring plenty of water (3-5 liters) with you – even for short hikes in the desert!
Tip: To get to the red canyon, take route 12 north from Eilat. The red canyon is on the east side of the road. Follow the unpaved road until you reach a parking area which is bordered by stones.
Tip: Check the weather before your hike. If it will be rainy or extremely hot, please don't go to hike .
