[ENG] A quick multicache on the Audace Pier, previously known as Saint Charles Pier, on Trieste waterfront.
[ITA] Nel 1740 affondò nel porto di Trieste, vicino alla riva, la nave San Carlo. Invece di rimuovere il relitto, si decise di utilizzarlo come base per la costruzione di un nuovo molo lungo 95 metri, ultimato nel 1751 e intitolato appunto a San Carlo. Nel 1861 il molo venne allungato fino a raggiungere l’attuale lunghezza di 246 metri, ed impiegato sia per navi passeggeri che per navi mercantili.
Il 3 novembre del 1918, alla fine della prima guerra mondiale, la prima nave della Marina Italiana ad entrare nel porto di Trieste e ad attraccare al molo San Carlo fu il cacciatorpediniere Audace; in ricordo di questo avvenimento nel 1925 venne cambiato il nome al molo ed eretta alla sua estremità una rosa dei venti in bronzo sorretta da una colonna in pietra bianca, ancor oggi presente.
Con lo spostamento dei traffici marittimi in altre zone del porto, il molo Audace ha perso la sua funzione mercantile, rimanendo però un luogo di passeggio molto frequentato e di grande fascino, amato dai triestini.
[ENG] In 1740, ship San Carlo sank in the harbor of Trieste, close to the shore. Instead of removing the wreck, it was used as a basis for the construction of a new 95 meter long pier, which was completed in 1751 and named Saint Charles Pier. In 1861, the pier was extended to its present length of 246 meters, and used both for passenger and merchant ships.
On November 3, 1918, at the end of WWI, the first ship of the Italian Navy to enter the Trieste harbor berting at this pier was destroyer Audace; in memory of this event, in 1925 the pier was renamed and a bronze compass supported by a white stone column was built.
After the relocation of maritime traffic in other parts of the harbor, Audace Pier has lost its commercial function, but remains a popular and fascinating place for walking, beloved by Triestine citizens.
