Geocache Description:

A quick drive-by cache at a pleasant little roadside stop, along the banks of the Albert River. Toilet facilities, BBQ's and a shelter are provided. You are looking for a large round screwtop container. Please use stealth as the muggles will quickly appear out of nowhere. Please ensure the lid is done up tightly. Thanks!

I remember this spot well from my childhood. I grew up not too far away and knew I could always rely on this picnic area to go a metre or so underwater when we had flooding rains, and therefore stop my school bus from getting through! The reserve never had a name until the year 2000, after which time it was christened the John Crew Memorial Picnic Area.

John Crew was a local man who had a farm in nearby Gelliondale. He was well known for his early innovations into sustainable farming practices and was very actively involved in Landcare. John was an inaugural member of the 'Albert River Farm Trees Group', later to become the 'Albert River Landcare Group' - so it seems only fitting that this area along the Albert River be named in his memory, to honour his tireless work and devotion to our environment.

UPDATE: On the 22nd October 2021 the local Alberton West CFA painted this amazing old tree, an amazing new colour - Blue! The tree was painted as their contribution to the Blue Tree project which aims to raise awareness and encourage conversations around mental health.

From the website: “Our mission is to help spark difficult conversations and encourage people to speak up when battling mental health concerns. By spreading the paint and spreading the message that "it’s OK to not be OK", we can help break down the stigma that’s still largely attached to mental health.”

Check out the website for more information: www.bluetreeproject.com.au

To date there are 687 blue trees registered with the project, whilst the majority can be found in Australia, there are a small number which are international. A great initiative for something we all need to talk more about. Well done to the Alberton West CFA for creating a wonderful talking point, and also installing lights so the tree can be seen at night, as a shining beacon of light in the darkness. And also a very huge thanks for being great sports in signing the log book, and safely returning the cache to its hiding spot.
