Tempe of Frienship, view from Sylvia

Old Sylvia is one of the regions of great park of Pavlovsk. "The Twelve tracks" were designed in the early 1790s by architect V. Brenna. Center of the composition is an area with a statue of Apollo Belvedere. Twelve tracks diverge from it, between which there are twelve statues: Venus Kallipigi (the goddess of love and beauty), Flora (the goddess of flowers), Mercury (messenger of the gods), Evterpa (muse of lyric poetry), Melpomene (muse of tragedy), Thalia (muse of comedy), Terpsichore (muse of dancing), Erato (muse of love poetry), Polyhymnia (muse of hymns and eloquence), Calliope (muse of epic poetry and chants), Clio (muse of history) and Urania (muse of astronomy). Each of the twelve tracks ends by pavilion and sculpture associated with the statue of the central area. One of the 12 tracks ends by Parents` Monument built in 1786 by architect Charles Cameron. Initially, it was a pavilion in memory of Frederica, sister of Empress Maria Feodorovna. But within a few years, some relatives of the Empress also died: her sister Elizabeth, her brother Duke Charles, her father Frederick Eugene, Duke of Württemberg, and then her mother, Duchess Sophia Frederica Dorothea. In 1807, Russian sculptor Ivan Martos created a marble sculpture and the pavilion has become a monument to parents of the Empress.
