EN:
The bridge over the Soca River in Solkan in Slovenia is a construction marvel of the world — it is a bridge with the largest stone arch on railway lines in the world. The bridge was built in 1905 as a key element on the Bohinj Railway Line, and the traffic of the second railway connection of Vienna and Central Europe with the port of Trieste began to run in July of 1906. The Solkan Bridge with the stone arch span of 85 metres was, at the time, the state-of-the-art achievement of the Austrian engineering school for the bridge construction.

The most difficult task during the construction of the bridge was the centering of the main arch. For the scaffolding, 1160 m3 of the finest quality wood was needed. The making of the arch was supervised by the engineer Leopold Örley. 1960 m3 of the best stone from the quarry Cava Romana in Nabrezina was used to build the arch.

Unfortunately, the bridge was not meant to live long. In August 1916 the Austrian soldiers blew the main arch of the bridge with 930 kg of explosive and the whole structure collapsed into the river below. The bridge was restored and opened again by the Italian Railways in August 1927. After the World War II, the bridge was reconstructed several times.
